Early American History
This period of American history centers around the Revolutionary War (a.k.a. the War of Independence). At first, the English-speaking Europeans in North America lived in the thirteen English colonies. As such, these people were citizens of the British Empire. But these people came to resent British rule. They protested and eventually fought the Revolutionary War to break away from England and its ruler, King George III. They published the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Eleven years later, in 1787, the Constitution (laws and government of our new country) was signed into law by the Second Constitutional Congress. In 1812, Great Britain fought to reestablish its control over the people of the United States, but was again defeated. After this, the sovereignty of the United States would never again be questioned by the British or by any other country.
