WORLD WAR I
WW-I (known at the time as "The Great War") began when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. The conflict quickly escalated into a full-scale war involving several countries and causing death and destruction on a scale never seen before. Key Concepts include trench warfare, modern weaponry (tanks, airplanes, submarines, mustard gas); nationalism, and alliances. Key historical figures include Kaiser Wilhelm, Archduke Ferdinand, Pres. Woodrow Wilson, and Vladimir Lenin. Important historical events include the Zimmerman telegram, sinking of the Lusitania, the battle of the Somme, and the Schlieffen Plan.
